One remorseful day

An incident happened over the weekend.

A boy and his family came from a four-hour out-of-state event. Before heading back home, they have to stop over at a relative’s house. On their way, they got off at a gas station and bought some goodies. After an hour, the boy realized something and he went hysterical at the backseat,

"Mommy, I forgot the candy. It’s in my jacket’s pocket!”
“What do you mean?”
his mom said who was at the front seat.
“It’s this,” showing off the hard candy.
“You mean you had it all along and we never paid for it?”
“Yes,”
his face looking so worried.
“That is not good."
“What will I do?”
and he started to sob.
“Ask for forgiveness from God.”

There was silence. And then,“But mommy can we just go back?”
“We left the store an hour already,”
then she glanced at the driver’s seat.

The boy sobbed, looked at the front wheel and said,
“Let’s go back, daddy, go back! Let’s go back, go back daddy.”

The boy never stopped ranting until an hour later …

“Now you know what to do.” his mom said.

The boy hurriedly got off from the car with his dad. A few minutes later, the boy returned from the store, sullen.

“Hey why are you still sad?”
“Because I still feel bad Mommy.”
“But you did a good job. You went back and paid for it. We’re proud of you.”
“No, I still feel bad.”

There was silence in the car throughout the entire road trip until they arrived at their relative’s house. A family member noticed he was quiet. When asked if he wants to talk about something, he was at first hesitant. Nevertheless, after some hugs and leading questions, he eventually narrated his story.

“Wow you did a good job.” the family member said in the end.
“I still feel bad.”
“Did you say sorry?”
“Yes”
“So why feel bad, did you do it on purpose?”
“No, but because the cashier told me not to do it again I’m bad.”
“Hmm, look, what you did was bad at first but you did something about it which is good. And, you, you’re not a bad boy.”

He smiled at the comment then he was back to his usual playful mood. Eventually, his day still ended well.

By the way, the little boy in the story is my six year old nephew. And I’m proud of him.

I want to add a comment to the little boy's testimony. He is a God fearing young man for sure. His biggest test was to overcome the fiery darts of the evil one. Remember how Peter was influenced by the devil in the presence of Christ who rebuked the devil for projecting evil thoughts in the mind of Peter. The store tenant had an evil perspective on the matter. It could have been his own evil heart or the influences of a devil. One thing for sure is that any God fearing christian would have taken pride in any child who demonstrated a heart like the little boy. Thank God for interceding on his behalf. Through others, He delivered the kid's heart from tormenting lies of the devil. In the end, he gave God glory and God gave him victory!
